My reading is going well I had to highlight and annotate in high school so I’m somewhat used to it. I sometimes I think highlight to much making it a bit harder to pull out the more important things.
I prefer a long way gone for the fact that I prefer more serious writing. I think it’s writing style is it’s strong point and weaknesses are that it does not appeal or relate to as many due to its somber and melancholy atmosphere. While I thing mango streets strength is also in some ways its weakness in how true style of writhing is broken but flows if you understand how to read it and it can certainly be more relatable than a long way gone.
I feel a good theme would be longing. She talks abut wanting more and not wanting to fall into place and wanting to create her own path in life.A good example of this Woolley be the quote”I Inherited her name, but I don’t want to inherit her place by the window’’. (Cisneros,11) this is important to understand as a theme because I feel it somewhat defines her character.
Robert, one way of putting Cisneros' book is that it is strange (different) but yet familiar. Beah's book and experience is foreign, straight up. So I totally feel your insight to the terrain that we are trying to walk together in these books. Keep chugging, left foot, right foot!
