Journal Four

In chapter 14 Beah describes one of the most gruesome acts he has made yet in the book. Beah and the other soldiers had captured prisoners and had been ordered to kill them in a competition. Beah and others were ordered to slit the throats of the prisoners and the one who did the best job won. "His Adam's apple made way for the sharp knife, and I turned the bayonet on its zigzag edge as I brought it out"(Beah 125). I think Beah dramatized this part of chapter 14 because he wanted to show just how evil he had truly become because of the war. when I was reading through this part of the chapter I was wondering how much farther did he go but not tell the audience.I think Beah took out all of his anger he had towards the war out on the man he executed, just like how he was trained to. I think Beah could be rehabilitated, but to what extent. He will never be the same after going through and doing everything he had done. He had seen and done so many evil things that if he was rehabilitated, how long did that take?

  1. I think the scene you picked that was dramatized was a good one. This is a very disturbing scene with Beah and it really shows how far gone Beah is.
