Research Journal from Teylar Poindexter

My favorite inspirational quote from Gbowee.

Leymah Gbowee is a 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner, social worker, Liberian peace activist and a women’s rights advocate. Gbowee is best known for leading a nonviolent movement that helped bring together Muslim and Christian women. This movement helped play a huge role in ending Liberia’s 14 year civil war. This astounding historic achievement paved way for the election of Africa’s first female head of state, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Gbowee received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in organizing leading the women’s peace movement. Gbowee is the founder and president of the Gbowee Peace Foundation that is based in Liberia. Her foundation provides leadership and educational opportunities to youth and girls in West Africa. She decided to open up this foundation because of the affects she saw the war take on Liberians. She trained as a trauma counselor to help treat former child soldiers because the impact that the war has had on her personally.

  1. I thought that the background that you gave was really interesting. Gbowee seems to be very similar to Esther.

  2. I think it is really great that Gbowee made the Gbowee foundation to help out the young and girls in West Africa.
